george shaw

(Born in Coventry 1966. Lives and works in Nottinghamshire)
George Shaw produces small scale painterly images of domestic scenes and scenarios. Common to all his work is understatement, and the careful manipulation of either the image directly or the psychological setting. The collection of his works placed together creates a journey of experiences and places, accumulatively seeking to find a destination of meaning. All the works share a sense of nostalgia, of absence and ordinariness - each painting marking a memory or moment. Somehow the works appear unresolved, they rest uneasily, highlighting something which is not quite in place. "In the same way the process of making these paintings becomes the act of burying and digging up memories, they are tombs of a kind, buried chests full of treasure". (GS)
