A Child’s Eye View was designed as
an artwork for children and their adults. The ground floor of Lanternhouse
was transformed by a team of artists into a landscape made to suit
the dimensions and viewpoints of the under fives. Its changing colours
and textures were chosen and constructed to intrigue the senses
and imaginations of young children. The design also aimed to act
as a catalyst for adults to explore play and creativity with young
children.
The process began with a group of visual artists and makers who
designed and created the complex magical spaces, always taking sight,
sounds, smells and touch into consideration. The process then developed
with the performer and directors arrival who worked on how children
might be led in groups through this environment. They concentrated
on creating an experience which led the children to making their
own discoveries and encouraged their carers or parents to observe
this. This build up of creators meant that new perspectives were
introduced at different points which gave the project a shifting
dynamic that carried it forward.
